Geohash Encoder / Decoder
Convert GPS coordinates into a geohash, or decode a geohash back into its geographic cell.
π§ Encode coordinates
Enter latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, geocaching degrees/minutes, or degrees/minutes/seconds.
Examples: N 44Β° 17.000, -79.466667, 44Β° 17β² 0β³
π Decode a geohash
Paste a geohash to find its geographic centre, rectangle bounds, cell size and surrounding cells.
Geohashes use the digits 0β9 and a restricted lowercase alphabet. Longer geohashes identify smaller geographic areas.
Your geohash result
8 charactersImportant: A geohash identifies a rectangular area, not one exact GPS point. Decoding returns the centre of that area; the original location cannot be uniquely recovered from its geohash.
Cell position
A local diagram of the decoded cell, with the position of your supplied coordinate when encoding.
Orange point: entered GPS location
Neighbouring geohashes
Tap a cell to decode its area. Adjacent cells have the same precision as your current geohash.
Geohash prefixes
Each shorter prefix represents a larger area containing this cell. Tap to inspect.
How to use this tool
- To encode, enter GPS coordinates, choose 1β12 characters, then select Encode coordinates.
- To decode, enter a geohash and select Decode geohash.
- Review the centre location, bounds, cell footprint, neighbouring cells and prefixes.
- Copy the result or open the decoded centre in Google Maps.
Geohashes follow the standard base32 interleaved longitude/latitude algorithm. Calculations run directly in this page; the optional Google Maps link opens a separate website.
