Compass Bloom Code

A compass cipher you can actually crack with pencil and paper. Every symbol pair points to one square in a fixed 8 Γ— 8 grid.

✦ Create a mystery code

Enter a clue or final coordinates. Symbols stay exactly the same whenever you encode the same message.

Supports A–Z, 0–9 and the punctuation shown in the grid. Lowercase converts to uppercase; line breaks become spaces.

✧ Solve a Compass Bloom code

Paste a CB2 code and decode it instantly.

How to solve it by hand

No secret knowledge is needed if a puzzle provides the clues below. Eight directions give eight rows and eight columns. The filled moon ● chooses the row; the hollow moon β—‹ chooses the column.

1. Follow the compass clockwise

↑   β†—   β†’   β†˜   ↓   ↙   ←   β†–. Start at the top-left corner of an 8 Γ— 8 grid.

2. Fill the grid like a snake

Put A–Z then 0–9 then the symbols listed beneath the grid, going left-to-right on row one, right-to-left on row two, and so on.

Example: ↑●↑○ = A   ↑●↗○ = B   ↗●↖○ = I

3. Decode each group of four symbols: the first arrow with ● selects the row; the second arrow with β—‹ selects the column. Ignore the spacing and slashesβ€”they only make the code easier to read. For example, ↑●↑○ means row ↑, column ↑: the letter A.

Hint 1 β€” The two moons

Each letter, digit, space or punctuation mark takes TWO compass points. A filled moon selects the row; a hollow moon selects the column. The compass turns clockwise.

Hint 2 β€” Fill the grid

Make an 8 Γ— 8 grid. Put A in the top-left corner, then B through H to its right. Keep writing A–Z, then 0–9, but reverse your travel direction at the end of each row, like a snake.

Hint 3 β€” Coordinate punctuation

After Z and 0–9, put these symbols into the remaining cells in order: SPACE . Β° , : ; ? ! - ' / + ( ) & @ # % * = _ $ [ ] { } < >. The complete grid above can be used to verify your hand solution.
