Scanning tips: Use dark bars on white, leave clear space on each side and avoid stretching the barcode. Very long codes may become too wide for small labels. Test a print with a scanner or phone before using it outdoors.
Which barcode should I use?
- Code 128: Best for compact text, cache IDs, clues, serial numbers and mixed letters/numbers. Automatically switches sets for dense digit strings.
- Code 39: Simple barcode suitable for uppercase letters, digits and a few symbols. Often useful for puzzle props and DIY labels.
- EAN-13: Standard 13-digit retail barcode. Enter 12 digits to calculate the check digit, or enter a valid 13-digit number.
For geocaching: Print a barcode onto a clue card, label, lockbox or cache log. The scanned content can reveal a password, GC-style code, text message or number. A barcode records data, but does not encrypt it.
Important: Creating an EAN-13 graphic does not register a retail product number with GS1 or assign ownership of a GTIN.
